OHOS and arjeea21 artists to work with REME Museum of Technology

Ten artists from OHOS and arjeea21 are excited to be working with the REME Museum of Technology in 2014 to make work that responds to items in the collection in Arborfield and to the work of the Corps of Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers.  Visitors will be welcome at two art exhibitions: "Test Pieces" in the Keep in Reading in April that shows the use of small models in creative and technical processes, plus a major exhibition in the Prince Philip Vehicle Hall at REME in Arborfield throughout the summer.  This project is funded by a grant to the REME Museum by Arts Council England.

Alok Sharma, MP supports OHOS and the Keep

Alok Sharma MP, artist Jenny Kiehn, and OHOS Chair Ingrid Jensen
OHOS is delighted to be visited by Mr Alok Sharma, MP for Reading West.  Mr Sharma was given a guided tour of the Keep, including the artist's studios and gallery spaces, plus some of the more hidden areas.  He was very interested in tha artists' work and the history of the Keep and its associated heritage, and enjoyed seeing the Giant Hand made by artist Jon Lockhart for Handstellation - part of Whitley Arts Festival.  Mr Sharma's support for OHOS's campaign to restore the Keep is much appreciated, and he has already helped publicise it by writing a post on his website (click here to read more), and by organising a BBC radio interview for OHOS's Chair.

Architectural Heritage Fund Grant

OpenHand OpenSpace is delighted to be awarded a grant of £2900 from the Architectural Heritage Fund for a Project Viability Report.  This is to assess plans for the future sustainable use of the Keep, and includes a new structural survey and costing of likely works needed.  OHOS has commissioned Mark Lovell Design Engineers for this project, as Mark recently worked on the very similar Devizes Keep, and therefore has good knowledge of the problems presented by the Reading's Keep.  This is an important step towards securing the future of the artist's studios and art gallery.

Printmaking with Cath Baldwin

Eleven artists learned a great deal in a relaxed and enjoyable session at The Keep making monoprints, and using a roller press to create linocuts by learning about colour reduction and accurate registration.  It was also an opportunity to become more familiar with eco- and user friendly printing materials that are solvent free.  Thank you Cath for this excellent Artspeak event!

Reading Contemporary Art Fair

OpenHand OpenSpace is delighted to have a stand at Reading Contemporary Art Fair 2013 at Rivermead, 27-28 April.  Jon and Kate Lockhart, Julia Rogers, Robert Fitzmaurice and Ingrid Jensen installed a display of work, and Kate, Robert and Julia have been handing out information about OHOS's exhibitions, the studios and gallery, and the Artspeak programme of talks and workshops.  A great opportunity for networking and audience development.

Weather, Art and Music

WAM, the Weather, Art and Music group directed by singer Pierrette Thomet, held a creative art day organised by OHOS artist Julia Rogers on 19 April.  The meeting at the Institute of Physics in Portland Place, London brought together meterologists, musicians and artists aiming to develop long term art-science collaborations for a second WAM Festival in Reading in 2014.  Several OHOS artists are involved, and there are also plans for  September 2013  for an art exhibition at the Met Office in Exeter , and some art interventions at the Royal Met Society Amateur Meterology Conference to be held at the University of Reading.

A BigThank You to ClarksLegal!

OHOS has for some years been grateful to Antony Morris and the other partners at ClarksLegal for commercial sponsorship in exchange for placing work in the law firm's offices in Reading.  This year an exciting new opportunity has arisen - to place work in their Covent Garden office in London as well as the offices in The Forbury.  This funding supports the studios and gallery, and helps OHOS to carry on its public education work.
Many OHOS artists provide work and help hang the exhibitions.  The image shown is Kate Lockhart's view of the Thames in London.

Happy Museum Meeting

Reading's Hidden History is being revealed!  Brendan Carr and Nicola Mann of Reading Museum are working with Oxford Road residents and heritage volunteers to prepare all kinds of interesting surprises about the history of the area.  Participants in this project, funded by the Happy Museum, are definitely getting happier as the project develops, and the plan is to show research results at the Oxford Road Fun Day in Kensington Park on Saturday 6 July.  There are also lots of ideas and leads to follow for further adventures in local history and culture.  This meeting at the Keep on Saturday 20 April also had a culinary dimension - Nicola had baked a large tray of gigantic and delicious biscuits to sustain the participants.
